I ended up in Belitung by chance… and it turned out to be one of the best surprises of my Asian journey 🤩.
Here are 3 things I’ll never forget about this island:
- The stunning white sand beaches are practically empty, with the most incredible turquoise waters
- The local food, especially the fresh fish dishes, is absolutely delicious
- The local people are incredibly warm and friendly

Belitung is an Indonesian island, located in the Java Sea, off the coast of Sumatra.
The easiest way is to take a flight from Jakarta. The journey only takes an hour.
The best time to visit Belitung is from May to September, during the dry season.
The ideal duration depends on individual preferences. Count at least 3-4 days, but a week or more allows you to explore the island in depth.
Enjoy paradise beaches, go on a boat excursion around the islands, go snorkeling, savor the local cuisine and admire the magnificent sunsets.

Belitung, a Sumatra treasure
Located in the Java Sea, Belitung is an island relatively unknown to Europeans in Indonesia. This paradise island is situated near the coast of Sumatra. Its charm lies in its pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters.
Belitung’s history is closely tied to tin mining. Starting in the 19th century, the island experienced economic growth thanks to its rich deposits. This period shaped the landscape and local culture.
Today, Belitung is focusing on sustainable tourism. The island preserves its authenticity while warmly welcoming visitors. Its culture blends Malay, Chinese and Javanese influences. This diversity is reflected in the architecture, cuisine and local traditions.
What to do in Belitung ?
Belitung is packed with activities for all tastes. Whether you’re a fan of paradise beaches, water sports or cultural discoveries, the island has something to satisfy you.
Here’s an overview of the best things to do in Belitung:
- Tanjung Tinggi Beach : a white sand paradise
- Magical sunset at Laskar Pelangi
- Island-hopping boat trip and snorkeling
- Paddle boarding or Jetski excursion
- Panorama from Stefanus Viewpoint
- Explore the town of Tanjung Pandan
Tanjung Tinggi Beach : a white sand paradise

Tanjung Tinggi is one of Belitung’s beautiful beaches. Imagine pristine white sand and turquoise water as far as the eye can see. It’s the ideal beach for relaxing, swimming and enjoying the happiness of being here.
The huge granite rocks that border the beach create a unique landscape. They also offer perfect shady spots for a picnic.
It’s important to note that, out of respect for the local culture, it’s better to avoid swimming in a bikini on the beaches when there are locals near you. Instead, opt for more covering clothing, such as a one-piece swimsuit, a t-shirt, board shorts or cycling shorts.
Magical sunset at Laskar Pelangi

For a truly special moment, head to Laskar Pelangi at sunset. The sky dresses in incredible colors, reflecting on the calm water.
Sitting on one of the rocks, time stands still. It’s the perfect place to relax, enjoy, breathe and take beautiful photos.
Island-hopping boat trip and snorkeling

Many Island-hopping boat trip are offered. Here’s a summary of my experience.
Meet at Tanjung Kelayang port to find the captain. In my case, I chose to trust the manager of Belitung Deduang who connected us.
For 600,000 IDR (about $38), I got a private boat for the day. And honestly, it was the most beautiful and comfortable boat of those I saw that day !
🩵 The excursion lasts from 9am to 4pm, but the schedule is flexible according to your needs. In any case, it’s an unforgettable excursion.
🏝️ We stop at several islands including: Kelayang and its cave, Batu Belayar, Pasir and its stretch of sand in the middle of turquoise blue water, Lengkuas and its old white lighthouse.
🤿 We swim several times in still preserved coral reefs, with truly beautiful fish.

The Stefanus Viewpoint is also a must-see for those who appreciate beautiful landscapes.
This viewpoint offers a panoramic view of Tanjung Kelayang beach. It’s a quiet and peaceful spot, pleasant at any time of day.
Explore the town of Tanjung Pandan
The largest city in Belitung, Tanjung Pandan, deserves a quick visit. It has kept its charm with its colonial houses and peaceful streets.
Don’t miss the local market to soak up the atmosphere and taste local specialties. It’s also an opportunity to do some shopping for souvenirs, as prices are particularly low.

Culinary specialties of Belitung ?
Belitung cuisine is known for its dishes based on fresh seafood. The fish is particularly fresh and flavorful.
A specialty not to miss is gangan, a tangy fish soup. Mie Belitung, noodles served with fish and vegetables, is also very popular.
The best restaurants on the island
During my stay, I mainly ate in warungs, these small family restaurants typical of Indonesia 🍽️. These Belitung restaurants offer authentic local cuisine at very affordable prices. I was often the only customer, which earned me attentive service.
The dishes are mainly based on fresh fish, crabs, shrimp, squid, accompanied by fried rice and vegetables. Be aware that menus are rarely translated, but don’t get discouraged: it’s an opportunity to try new things!
Where to stay in Belitung ?

Belitung offers plenty of accommodation options for all budgets. Choose from : hotels, bungalows and villas… 🏠 Some accommodations in Belitung even have private pools.
If you’re traveling on a smaller budget or simply enjoy spending time with locals, you’ll find happiness with local guesthouses. They offer a warm atmosphere and the opportunity to make wonderful connections.
Getting around Belitung Island
To get from the airport on arrival or departure, it is recommended to take a taxi 🚕.
📞 Eddy is a taxi in Belitung that I can recommend.

Then, to explore the island, the easiest way is to rent a scooter or a motorbike 🛵.
You can easily find one by talking to your hosts or with locals.
For my part, I rented from Kampong Dedaun and the Homestay mentioned above. The scooters were in very good condition and everything went very well.

Working in Belitung as a digital nomad
Belitung can attract digital nomads, drawn by an idyllic work environment. Personally, I really appreciated this but you need to enjoy being alone and living slowly.
The infrastructure for remote work in Belitung is similar to what you find elsewhere on Asian islands. Make sure your accommodation has a generator in case of power outages, or plan for an effective hotspot connection with your phone.
Internet connection is improving, but can be unstable in places. It is advisable to check the quality of WiFi in the establishment’s reviews before booking.
Some cafes in town offer a pleasant workspace with a good connection. It’s also an opportunity to taste the local coffee, known for its quality.
For those who need a more structured workspace, some hotels have business centers but I didn’t have the opportunity to test them.
Personally, I worked all over without too much difficulty. Staying around Tanjung Pandan, I never encountered major problems.
☀️
Belitung is waiting for you for a unique experience. Its pristine beaches, delicious cuisine and relaxed atmosphere make it an ideal destination for those seeking peace and authenticity.
Don’t hesitate to discover this hidden gem of Indonesia. Belitung promises unforgettable memories and magical moments.
